Title: Forum Server move
Post by: Halfcrazy on April 23, 2013, 07:05:33 PM
We are going to be moving the forum to a new server. I am currently backing up all the files now and verifying they are good. I only point this out as I want to save anyone from posting lots of pictures from now forward as they may not get backed up. I will do a final backup as close to the move as I can and I will also try to let everyone know when the move will happen. Thank you for your patience during this transition.

Ryan;

Not sure how I missed the original post but it looks good from here.

Folks will have to change their bookmarks but otherwise it seems to have worked well.

Good job.

Hi Ryan,

Good moove for the forum.

Just two things for me :

1) in the header of midnitesolar website, you have to update the forum link to the new URL.

2) Yesterday, in the morning, I posted a PM to you, on the old forum, about mymidnite. Do I have to redo it ?

Ryan,

yes that link update is really needed. I notice almost no guest logins as they do not get redirected to the new site.

ryan,
what i didn't like about the old forum was that when there were multiple posts in a thread category and you hit the back arrow to go back one page it showed that there weren't any more posts to read. this one does show there are still unread posts as i've overlooked new posts in the past due to this. the new one will always show unread posts in the thread category until you have opened each and every one of them.

dgd,
hmm, i hadn't thought of that, but it makes perfect sense that many guests did not read ryan's note on the change as they are here too infrequently. maybe the spam didn't read the changes too, but i'm sure the spam will catch up just as the lost guests will too.

Ok so I have added a redirect so the old URL still works. Let me know if you see any funny business there?

just an fyi and i don't know if it was fine before, but the backpage still does fine, but i found that hitting home will not show there are more threads to read when they are there as i did just try it.

So does it erase the new posts in that category or the complete forum?

I am really now just starting to dig deep into SMF and it is pretty easy to manipulate, I was reluctant before as I feared I would break something but now that I have moved it to its new server and understand how it all works I am much less afraid to mess anything up.

I will be adding some new logos next week once Rob gets them to me.

the new posts will still have an indicator that they are new in the threads, but the thread category does not indicate there are threads with new posts in them. you can try this for yourself when you enter a thread category and see more than 1 thread with new postings in them as indicated by the midnite moons. you can read one and that moon will disappear as it should leaving the unread thread still with its moon. if you hit home you will not see the moon there in that thread category indicating that there are unread posts even though you did not read the other thread with a moon on it. if you enter the thread category you will still see the thread as being unread with a moon being present. the previous forum erased the indicators not only on the thread category, but also the unread threads themselves upon hitting home exiting a thread category. the threads are intact, but indicators of them being unread erase. on naws they do not erase until you have read every thread in the thread category. i am not all that familiar with bbs setups to know what the trigger is or how to fix it. hope that's clear enough of an explanation.

Ryan,

When entering a new message I no longer get the various options such as including smilies, UL txt etc.. these used to be
available a couple of lines above the text input box. Or is it just me and I need to set some editing option?

Seems to be working for me?

Might need to flush any cookies on your computer for the forum?

I see a couple cases of this. I am not sure what that is all about. I will open the old server up and see if I can scrounge some of them manually. Anyone with missing posts chime in here.

now the moons on the individual threads that showed each thread with new posts to be read are gone. i had to look at the post day on the right hand side.

Yes, I also find that  "Show unread posts since last visit."  doesn't usually work.

Sometimes it does work.   This has not changed since the move though.  Either place
did the same thing.

Clearing the cookies fixed the "Show unread posts since last visit."  for me for a day, but it stopped working again.

I never had this issue with the old site.

You probably need to clear your cache or site cookie again because of the additional work done on the forum in the last couple days.

I am thinking that must be a cookie issue on your PC? It is looking like to me SMF shares cookies with itself. What I mean by that is it seems that if you log in to 2 different smf forums the cookies seem to intermingle. I am digging here ti see why?

i'm not so sure that's the problem. at the bottom of each thread list in a particular thread category i see this,
Topic you have posted in
Normal Topic
Hot Topic (More than 15 replies)
Very Hot Topic (More than 25 replies)

Locked Topic
Sticky Topic
Poll

note there's nothing of new posts. not sure if it shows more for you guys that the moons show up for. moons used to be present on the individual threads that had new posts so it was a change you instituted, just not sure what.

The issue I am having here is the post says "NEW" to the right of the title when there are new posts. If I log in as test I see the "NEW" in an orange box, If I log in as myself the orange box is not there. So this in itself has to be a user setting. I am not sure what, why or how? I need to figure this out and maybe this will be the issue you are seeing as well.

Ryan;

I only have one account to check but I only get the "NEW" text (no box). I looked over my settings and nothing in there seems related to that? Some fora have optional themes and I have seen those cause this kind of problem. All my settings on how the forum looks are "default" so probably not that. I did not notice optional themes.

I suspect it is related to the data base. I will keep digging... 8)

1/2 CZY, I get the Orange box with NEW in it ..

I use the FFOX and go to 'unread posts', then if use the browser's  'back arrow' it goes back to the 'unread posts' and  remembers that I have viewed a thread and it is gone from the list.
Very occasionally it does not remember...

Firefox here too on Ubuntu.

This gets curiouser and curiouser.  ::)

Orange "NEW" fit better before anyway. Either is fine in my opinion.

well i think i found the issue so the orange box vs the moon is a cache issue. I did find something in the language/themes that may have been the cause

Ryan, yesterday I was looking at the main menu, of all categories to post in, AFTER I had read all the NEW postings and there was 1 dark half moon, but I had read everything in the "unread"list, so I went to it and found it in the new child category of on-line monitoring. ???
Read the post and the half moon changed to the liter version so that part worked.  I will watch for  that to occur again.

I've only seen the half moon - it seems to work well for me.
Title: Re: Forum Server move

if you didn't fix it you are on the right track for it appears fixed to me offhand as the moons are in the thread categories and new is showing up in threads with new posts now. i'm fine with whatever you want it to appear as just as long as i can determine which are read already as otherwise it is walking blindly through the forum. it will be interesting to see if my initial observations of the disappearances of the indicators will take place or not. i will update as i go through it.
thanks for your efforts on this ryan.
Title: Re: Forum Server move
Post by: niel on May 12, 2013, 02:09:39 PM
ok my original complaint still exists. if i am in a thread category showing new posts that if going into there with multiple threads with new posts and not reading them all that upon exiting will cause the main thread category to not show the moon indicating there are still unread threads with new posts in that category. this happens no matter if you backspace a page or hit home. at least the threads themselves still retain the new posts indication even though the thread category indicator is gone.

i wish i knew the reason for it and i did not set up naws' website to know. naws' website does retain the unread posts indicator on the main thread categories area if all of the threads with new posts where not accessed. i may confer with bb later to see if he has a clue on the possible problem here.

Well,

For almost a week now, I've popped into the board, clicked the
"Show unread posts since last visit" link, which pops up:
"No unread topics found since your last visit." so I assume that
there is no traffic, so I roll on by.

Lo and behold! Lots of stuff has been posted in the last week.

Call me surprised.

cpm;

What link do you use for unread topics? I use this one:

http://midniteforum.com/index.php?action=unread (http://midniteforum.com/index.php?action=unread)

That works perfect for me. Then there are the cookies that might need to be flushed.

I find the same thing.  This was the same with the forum before it moved though.

The moons seem to work so far.  Also the little enuncinator "NEW"  also appears to work
next to a new thread that I have not read before.

I notice that the Otherpower forum's and Anotherpower  forum's unread link appears to work fine
so I have no idea why the midnite version of the SMS forums should work differently.
