Post by: CDN-VT on May 24, 2017, 06:27:55 PM
Running XP ?

The recent attacks have prompted Windows to release SP3 patch  for XP.
Very unusual for any company to support a product years after they end of life a product must have been a major flaw.

This from a now deceased friend who owned an ISP for 15 years... his take was it will take MS up to 2 decades , or possibly more, to replace all the XP based systems due to the penetration of XP into commercial 'point of payment' programs etc...  think of all the corner stores, etc....

I'll bet it is tied to the latest   Ransom Ware attacks and somebody BIG still using XP got bitten.

I think it is an importand topic, so i give my 5 cents to it ;-)

To make it clear, the link leads to the so called "Wannabe" update / patch for XP 32 bit
SP3 was already released since years, the heading is slightly misleading;)
It is a "patch" not the "SP" ;)

Just in case, if someone is looking for that patch and didn't know it exists or where to get it from -> also for other windos versions:
http://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=KB4012598
also for WES/POS and 2003/2008 and POS-modified XPs ((use the WES/POS) to get updates until 2019. But most POS-mods already have received the patch. My did hehe)

Many users have deactivated the update service of XP, after M$ support has ended. I guess they think, they are safe, no one sends them an contaminated update with malware or like that?
Rule #1: Set updates to "Download updates but install manually" so you can always check the KB first (don't 100% work in newer Windos, also if you hack w10 to do this, it will install some updates. That is not the safest way...)

XP 64 bit users will have to try the XP SP2 64bit or/and the 2003 patch, witch works. Dependent, if the XP64 was patched, to get updates from the 2003 server edition (same core files)
