Title: 48V 3kw Wind turbine with Classic 200 and clipper. Need information on boost.

Hi all. We used to run a 96v 2kw Chinese made turbine with its own charge controller into 48v battery bank. Worked really well. Even a low breeze would push some 2-300 watts and regularly 1100-1200 and a very satisfying 2400 or so when the ferry was cancelled (Located on French Island, Australia) It broke its casting in half and committed suicide with a 9m fall. Not entirely the fault of the Chinese crappy casting. We had an incident where the tower partly fell and a terrific jolt as the chain slack was taken up cracked the casing I suspect. About 3 months later it finished off what I must have accidentally started.

With the new 48v 3kw turbine and classic/ clipper combination we require the ferry to be cancelled to get useful voltage. At that point it is about 60-70v and working okay.  I kept thinking we were doing something wrong and contacted a friend. He had just put the clipper/ classic combination on same turbine thinking it would work better than the Chinese supplied controller. Same problem as mine. Seems the Chinese one has buck and boost and I recall it worked okay but nowhere near as good as the old 96v one did.

I have tried hard to find information on boost. There was a little bit of information to say you could set buck or boost but not both. I'd happily set boost only. I've used search funciton for the word "boost" in both classic and clipper PDF manuals and found almost nothing.

So, any idea how to set boost before I go out and buy a 3kw 5 blade 96v turbine. Currently looking at HYE.

I think the issue is that you need in excess of 70 V , your current max,  to charge that 48V bank... the answer lies in the manufacturers specs for charging...

Yes. We start to get a few watts as the turbine moves over battery voltage and as mentioned we get a charge in gale force winds.

Are we confirming there is no boost function?

well you can do a search of the forum for 'BOOST'.... I do remember a discussion on that a while back and IIRC boB made a comment... I got 102 hits...
