Title: (5) Midnite Classic 250s required???
Post by: David on October 15, 2017, 10:49:52 AM
Wanted to get sanity check on this theoretical setup for an off-grid system using (50) Kyocera KU265 panels; Voc: 38.3V, Isc: 9.26A

- (5) top-of-pole mounts with (10) KU265 wired 5 in series, 2 parallel strings on each mount (191Voc, Isc ~19A per array)
- Distance to mounts 350ft+ one way using 4ga. aluminum
- 48V battary bank

Because of the excessive distance to the panels with 4ga. aluminum they would be wired 5 in series for 191Voc. From the string sizing tool it is showing 5 Midnite Classic 250s would be required along with 5 combiner disconnects at each array and 5 separate disconnects where it enters the home.

Is there some way to simplify this setup?

The only "simplification" I could come up with is doing 3 in series and 5 parallel strings for 114.9Voc and Isc of 46.5A and increase to 60 panels. This would require "only" 4 Classic 150s that would handle 60 panels but require a lot of 1/0 Al cable for 6.3% wire loss for each 15 panel loss.

a screen capture of the MN sizing app result and your approx. location would help fill in the picture a bit.  ;)

Schneider & Morningstar both make solid 600v solar MPPT Charge controllers.  but they are not classics

Yes, getting a peek at the results would go a long way to getting a solution for you.

I'm not the original poster, but I have a similar issue.

I have 52 330w BlueSun Solar panels.  I'm not married to the number I could drop as low as 48 panels and still make my generation needs, but I'm trying to make the most use possible.  I'm in Phoenix so those temps are pretty standard.

Increase strings & drop to 3 in series ., You will still need more combiners than 12 @ that posted PDF.
So twin 12 Combiners work well .
