Title: RasPi 4 now available !
Post by: Steve_S on June 24, 2019, 01:56:51 PM
Good Day folks,

Well the new Raspberry Pi model 4 is OUT and an upgrade it is, with up to 4GB Ram onboard, 4K Video & more.   Released earlier than expected but competition is growing fierce and forward motion was accelerated.

More Information here at Raspi Org;
https://www.raspberrypi.org/products/raspberry-pi-4-model-b/

And the pricing remains quite affordable as it's only a couple of dollars more than previous versions... can't go wrong there.

I don't think the Pi 4B is quite available yet

Mid or early August I think.

Just tried to order the  Raspberry Pi 4 Desktop Kit

Andreas Spiess just  did his critical review of the new Raspberry Pi 4

This is also another youtuber who does a lot of reviews on Pi and other similar small board computers

I watched a couple of reviews including Andreas and I think it's likely a good thing to wait on till not only the software is ready to go but for any potential quirks to be sorted out.  I have a gut feeling they will have heat issues and that pretty much will need some cooling.  Must say, I am disappointed they didn't put a faster CPU on there.

Been peeking at OrangePi and a couple of others in the PI sub-families but none have the same following & support that Raspi Does.  Although the Orange Pi's do have a few extra features which may tempt me to try one...  Something to ponder on I suppose.

Okay, waiting IS JUSTIFIED on the 4.0 RasPi.

Your new Raspberry Pi 4 won't power on? USB-C cable problem now officially confirmed

More than likely there will be other Gotcha's… have heard rumours but no confirms yet although I wouldn't be surprised.  While they do not appear to be show stoppers at this time who knows....

A quick note, the Raspberry Pi 4B has been released, it has a few hardware fixes and tweaks and the org has released the first version of 64Bit Raspian as well, although most apps are still only 32bit, it's the start.

Stocks are presently limited and most vendors do not have them yet.  If purchasing new hardware be sure about which models you are dealing with.   I have yet to find any decent definitive comparison with a change log for the 4 & 4B but it has to be out there somewhere...

Here is another Pi 4 project from Andreas  . In previous video he showed how to use Graphana to simplify using large amounts of data like you can get from the Classic.
This video he shows how to set up Pi to simplify updating all programs and data

Glad I waited to get  Pi4 Steve ! Won't have time to play with this until winter - though winter seems to have come here to Wisconsin 3 or 4 weeks early.

Ditto, I have my 3B+ that ill be used for my Node-Red, classic & samlex stuff...   But I am now considering getting a 4B running Manjaro and a media player, so I can use that as my Video Player & web browser and light weight task computer.  Boat loads lower Wattage than my other computers, bad enough that I use a 47" LG 1080P LED TV  as my screen !  (likes watts too)

REF Manjaro:  https://manjaro.org/

Andreas also just did a video on integrating ZigBee - gotta look into that as well.   I want to be able to use IoT devices with my system, in particular an IoT Smartplug allowing me to turn off Satellite Modem or HRV ertc…   I bought a couple of Samsung ones because they can be managed by smartphone as well as Hass.IO BUT samsung wants ALL access to everything in your phone.  After I discovered how Intrusive & disrespectful of personal security many of these IoT makers are, I had to step back.   It appears that ZigBee may be a solution to that issue.

The Sonoff switches based on esp8266 are very inexpensive and easy to wipe the Sonoff software and put EspEasy Mega software on to have total control .
