Win 10 with "Bad Firmware"

I see a few have had this problem with the new updates. I saved the Win 8/10 fix to desk top. Rebooted. Then uploaded the new 1811 and that I see on the desktop as well. Plugged into Kid (not easy with no room for cord in the plastic cover) and lost all control of my Kid. Turned everything off so now power to kid while I biked to work....

came home tonight and turned it back on to see it still says "bootlegger 2.3 Bad Firmware". It keeps popping up a box every two seconds with a (G:) drive that doesn't want to connect. I'm in the garage with WiFi through my Iphone Hotspot. What's going on??? I really need to keep my batteries happy and now my system can't charge. NOT GOOD!

Ummm.... Not sure what I am reading in your post about WiFi etc...

can you please expand on what you said, as in how are you using all the connections from Kid to WiFi to ??

My Kid has been on a shelf since we moved and it has been awhile since I upgraded it.

Having said that, doesn't the Kid use a wired USB connection to upgrade?

Like Westbranch, I am not sure about the garage and WIFI information you posted. You need to be in the room with the Kid connected via a USB cable direct to your computer. I would avoid any USB hubs or other intermediate hardware between the Kid and computer. Frankly, I would remove that Win 10 virus that seems to be a big point of failure on Kid upgrades, but that is another rant.

Anyway, some clarification may help get a useful answer.

I replied  where you asked about this in another thread  , that another user had the same sort of problem. You said that the drive keeps popping up on your laptop - assuming you have the usb cord from your Kid plugged directly into the laptop. The other person said that they just kept dragging the update into the drive on their  laptop that would pop up for two seconds - they just kept trying to drag and drop it into that drive until it finally grabbed it and started the update. They said it took them 20 tries but finally got it to go.

I never had that problem with the Kid - the drive shows up steady on Windows for me.  But as the other user said in the other post - just keep trying to drag and drop that firmware update into the drive that pops up until you get it .

if you will rerun the reg edit it should work.  If you still have the problem, run the regedit, reboot the computer and then try to update the Kid.

I find that I need to rerun the regedit each time I want to update a Kid.  I believe it is a win 8/10 issue about registry entries.

Hope this helps.

Thanks all!

Yes, I have the Kid plugged directly into the computer. As our WiFi doesn't pick up in the garage where the Kid is, I had to link it through my Iphone with Hotspot to stay live. One question is that do I NEED the wifi at all? When I uploaded the firmware, isn't it on my laptop now? Or, is it just a link that must be done online?

Not sure what you mean by "reg edit" ??? Do you mean dump the 10 Fix and try straight up?

I did try dragging and dropping the flashing G drive but was darn cold trying for 20 minutes.

I appreciate any help as we are to have sun today and I really need to charge the batteries.

You have me confused - Windows 10 fix was for Classic firmware uploader.

The Kid does not use that  - it is just a matter of plugging the Kid into the computer, putting it into firmware update mode, and then you should see the Kid pop up on the computer as a drive ( on a Windows Explorer screen where you can see all the folders ) You then drag and drop the Kid firmware file into that drive.

There is a Window 8/10 fix registry file that has to be run and the PC rebooted before trying to do the Kid Firmware update. The fix file is a reg  file that disables indexing on remote drives.

Not sure why the OP is not seeing the Kid as a remote drive on his computer. Not sure that he has run the win81KidFix.reg file on his computer. His 1st post said he saved it to the desktop and rebooted his computer. So the question is did he double click the reg file so it makes the change required to the registry before rebooting.

I don't know if I ever did that fix or not on my laptop. I don't even remember last time I updated firmware if I was on Windows 10 yet or still on Windows 7 .

Thanks for clarifying that !

I know I must be missing something. I cleared off the uploads and went back to the MNS web page for Kid revisions. Now if I click on the 8/10 Fix all I get is a new tab on the Google with:

"Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Search]
"DisableRemovableDriveIndexing"=dword:00000001"

Just a text box. Nothing to click on to upload.  Any thoughts?

Wondering if someone at MNS has removed the link and that is why I only get a text message now when you click on the fix????

I just found the link on Midnite to this registry fix , downloaded it, ran it , and it did the fix .

http://www.midnitesolar.com/firmware/win81KidFix.reg

I confirmed that it added this fix because I looked in the regedit folder before and after I ran this .
I am using Windows 10
