Hi,

I'm looking for a wire lug to connect from a charge controller to a mne175sw breaker. The wire is 6awg thhn. Any recommendations?

Vic

Hi jmarc,

As you probably know,   breakers are used to protect wire and cable.

A 175 A breaker should probably have 2/0 cable connected to it.   Assume that this breaker is in a MiniDC,  or e-panel.    If so it is more difficult to simply replace the 175 with a breaker that has an appropriate rating for 6 AWG cable   ...   IMO.

Hi yes.  Actually from charge controller to 60amp breaker then to175amp breaker.  Both the charge controller and battery connections will land on the 175amp breaker.

Hi yes. Both the battery and charge controller will land on the breaker.

OH!  OK.   So the cable from the battery to the breaker,  and from the breaker to the inverter will be 2/0 or larger?

And,  the #6 AWG cable from the CC to this 175 A breaker will have a breaker that has about a 60 amp rating?   If so,  this would be fine.

You could use a 3/8" ring terminal on the #6 cable,  and use the 3/8" bolt that is on the breaker.   It might be difficult to find a screw lug that has a clearance hole for the 3/8" bolt on the breaker terminal.   They are probably available,  but perhaps not in the big box stores.   It might be OK to drill the hole in the screw terminal lug for a 3/8" bolt.

Sorry for my confusion on exactly what you were doing.

FWIW,   Vic

I found an image from a midnite manual of the stacked connection. See attached. Where can i find a ring terminal similar to that? I tried looking at the big box stores with no success.

Westbranch

Automotive stores , like NAPA... up here, have the best selection of tinned copper connections.

Thanks! Im a bit weary about using the vinyl insulated ring terminals, but the second link looks similar to the one on the image. Thanks!

Do you recommend the tin plated terminals or copper?

Vic

jmarc,

Would always use Tin plated,   almost without exception.

BTW,   many crimp terminals at Auto Supply stores  are Tin plated,  but,   often the Tin is on a steel terminal ...   steel is not a good base metal for electrical terminals,  IMO.

Thanks Vic for you help! Any recommendations on which crimper to use on the marine lug?  I have a green lee k111 but not sure if its compatible.

Go into a NAPA or an electrical supply house .
I buy them in boxes , But napa sells them in pairs .
They come in swedge  or CRIMP or Solder . They do have 3 types .
look into beldon / pico .
They are in stud hole size & wire AWG size . I have made a few from

They are in 0-10 AWG size  & I drill a hole & re-tin if need be . For long distance runs

Not Vic. But I would recommend taking to Ancor they have various crimper for their marine lugs. And their HD lugs are 100 percent heavy-duty annealed tinned copper.
