In 2010, I helped install an off-gridd solar electric system at a clinic about 10 miles east or Port au Prince Haiti. The clinic is operated by a USA based non-profit called Healing Art Missions (https://healingartmissions.org). The original system consisted of:

  • Twelve 130-watt Kyocera PV panels for a total of 1540 watts
  • A Magnum MS4024 24-volt inverter mounted on a Midnite Solar e-panel
  • An Outback FX60 charge controller
  • Twelve Trojan T105 batteries in three strings of four batteries for a 675 amp hour battery bank
For the most part, the system has worked well in supporting the clinic operations and the pump that provides water to the clinic. For a number of years, we've talked about expanding the system to support an air conditioner in surgery room. Last week we installed the expansions, consisting of

  • Eight 305-watt PV panels for 2440 watts of additional panels
  • Replace the FX60 with two Midnite Classic 150s. The Classic 150s are configured in follow-me mode
  • An additional MS array combiner
  • Replace the twelve T105 batteries with eight Trojan Trojan L16H-AC 6-volt batteries wired in two strings of four batteries for a 870 amp hour battery bank. We used 4/0 battery cables and a 300 amp T-fuse on each string.
  • A couple of 100 amp panel-mount breakers

The installation went well and the system is working very well. I am impressed with how early in the morning and late in the evening the Classic 150s eke power out of the panels.

Here's a picture of the inside of the E-panel wired for two Classic 150s.

The ground fault breaker on the left side was installed for the original charge controller but is no longer needed because of the built-in ground fault protection in the Classic 150s.
