There is a process for doing factory restore - see this video.
Since you are stuck in the upload screen not sure if this would work but you could maybe try holding the buttons Ryan says.

I would still get the cable plugged in , then plug it in your computer and see if the computer is in communication with the Kid and if it will upload the firmware . First do the process described in firmware update to make sure your computer is ready and have the firmware file ready to drag in if all goes well.

Might be worth opening a ticket with Midnite to ask them what you should do also.

... I have windows 8.1 pro. I also tried to access the other update for windows but it just opens like a page as opposed to a download.

I really need help.

Reviving this thread although it's resolved, for that part up there. Highlight everything on the opened page, right click and copy, open Notebook and paste, save as anything.reg (like win8-8.1and10regfix.reg) then double click on the saved file, allow the changes, restart the system and your required registry fix to install firmware is done.

Here's the registry fix if anyone wants to just copy and past this to a file:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Search]
"DisableRemovableDriveIndexing"=dword:00000001
