This is a continuation of comments regarding my Chevy Bolt battery learning. Previous posts are in Arduino - Arduino based PWM diversion system.

Chevrolet works slowly and I am not very patient. I found this method of reading the Bolt Pid's ( Process IDentifiers).

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1sY5n8WFu52U6a4_mg3MdcGcmDk3scAP8_muSy-BlXPc/edit#gid=1125667062

The method is to use a Bluetooth OBD 2 adapter send data to an Android device. A ODB 2 reader program (Torque Pro) then takes the data and displays it. Very neat. Please understand that I have never used a smart phone and had no idea what Android is. Once I saw what was needed I ordered this OBD 2 adapter.

https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B00H9S71LW/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I put an Android emulator program in my PC (Bluestacks). Then I put in the required file manager (Astro File Manager). After considerable head scratching I managed to get the required CSV file to be seen by the Torque Pro program. I tried to get the system to work but no go. After all this work I learned that Android emulator programs do not support Bluetooth.
So.. I bought an Android based tablet and started learning Android. I managed to get Torque Pro loaded into the tablet. Loading the CSV file into the tablet was giving me fits until I connected the tablet to my PC using a USB connection. The Windows file manager easily loaded the required file into Torque Pro. The Bluetooth adapter linked with tablet and the Torque Pro saw it. This not hard to do. Attached is a data file from the car.

The Bolt battery is 96 cell groups. Each cell group is 3 batteries in parallel. The 96 cell groups are grouped into 8 units of 12 cell groups each. The Bolt PIDs read the voltage of each cell group. This data is saved in an Excel file.

So I think my battery has failed. Cell group #29 has a voltage of about 3.86 V. Most of the other cell groups have voltages of 4.13 - 4.15 V. 5 cell groups are in the 4.12 V range. The car is now booked to go to the dealer for a "Battery Reset". I do not know what that is.....

To be continued. We like the car and are not sad we bought it. The info we have is that about 1 in 1000 Bolts are experiencing Battery failures. Usually if it fails it is in the first 15K miles. My car has 12K Km on it.

Good thing it is under warranty - and good thing you can monitor it before and after they work on it since that way you will have documentation if there is an ongoing problem with your battery .

I use Memu Android Emulator - might be less bloated than Bluestacks . You can also have different Android versions on it . All I have used it for is Grahams Classic Monitoring android app and works fine with that.

I don't think it will do bluetooth either though.

Also since you are new to Android the XDA sight above is the place to find out anything about which ever tablet you got - some are able to be rooted and install different operating systems in case you get bored with what you have - or want more control of it.  Doing that can give new life to older android phones that others are getting rid of ( free or cheap ) .

This is Grahams Classic Monitor app

The Bolt went into the dealer for a "Battery capacity reset". After the reset based on kw used per 5% on the SOC meter the battery capacity was 37KW. Not good for a 60 KW rated battery.

Back to the dealer for a battery capacity test. They intended to "drain" the battery and then charge it full. Following this procedure they then measure the individual cell group voltages. Car stayed overnight for this.

Cell group 29 seems to be a problem. Dealer consulting with GM. Car continues to stay  for another night.

GM states battery pack requires replacement. New one scheduled to dealer mid next week. Should have car back by end of week. Continuing to drive dealer rental car.

So - I think GM did quite well with this failure. I just wonder what they do with the failed pack...........

Check the dumpster behind the dealership after they put your new battery in Will !
You should ask them if they are sending it back to GM . If not ask them if you can have it and save them the $$ of disposing of it . Worth a try .

I was just at Midwest Renewable Energy Fair and they had some electric car stuff going on. I didn't spend enough time there - lot to do at the energy fair and I was only there two days. I did go to part of one talk where some guys were presenting on how to test and reuse Nissan Leaf batteries cells .

Hi Larry,

The battery packs go back to GM / LG for dismantlement and learning. I am sure both of these companies are disconcerted by the failures. Attached are images of the new battery pack etc

Two more images. Must be interesting for the dealer. Not exactly draining old oil out of a greasy engine.

Good that the dealers there are learning how to do it !
Hope the new battery pack lasts longer than the old one .

Will , looks like you collected some Saskatchewan gumbo :o on that battery.... that fine silt is damaging to almost everything it touches......  ;)

Too bad on that early failure of capacity...  they probably will not tell you the cause  :(

There is another casing inside the housing that we can see. The actual batteries and BMS are inside the  inside casing. I am not sure how it breathes or keeps the air clean. One would hope there is a filter or something.
