Trace Model 812
« on: March 10, 2019, 09:32:30 PM »
So the other day I was at a local Hamfest and spotted something I had to have. A circa 1995? Trace 812 Inverter. It was in very good shape, not used and abused. But why would I want a 24 year old square wave inverter? For histerical insignificance of course!  :)

And...the price was too cheap to pass up! I figured a kool wall hanger/dust collector at worst. So got it home and on the bench, grabbed the biggest battery I had handy, fed the Trace some 12VDC, and it was more than happy to output some 60Hz 120VAC.

Plugged in a 800 watt resistive load and the oversized 12V 18Ah battery had no trouble......

A bit dusty on the inside but all in all it will be a fine wall hanger conforming to the histerical insignificance label....

I got the deluxe kit, it had a solar cell and a meter.

Another under the cover look.

Robin, boB thinks this is a pre Robin at Trace 812? based on the battery terminals?

Well, looking at the date codes on the IC's, it looks like it is a mid 1990s inverter so Robin would have been there a few years by that point and I would have been there at least a year.

That loop of wire on top of the transformer is where the SB  StandBy or charger circuit would have hooked up had it had that option.

Nice catch for a wall or ceiling hanging !

Thanks for the info boB! Probably hang it from the ceiling. Overhead Inverters are rare!
Going to wire it up to a bigger battery tomorrow and see about getting the staircase waveform back while under load. The lawnmower battery had some serious voltage drop with the space heater! I just wanted to make sure all the magic smoke was still in there after 2 1/2 decades...:)

It is indeed a thing of beauty!
Wish I'd seen it first ;)
The test leads hanging out of the outlet do complete the image.
