I live in a rain forest & it's getting more water , I had to replace all 4" drainage to 6" solid pipe for the yard NOT to flood.
I'm thinking one of these : http://www.hydrogenappliances.com/powerpmas.html
PMA @ 48V  DC battery bank , that's 300 feet away . WW would be 6 feet in Dia  or larger .

I have NO head pressure , only volume , and come 3 months plus of every day raining , it's a 6 foot water table .

you are going to need to tell us how far the water can drop if you have a flume to deliver the water to the top of the W Wheel  (overshot)..... or how big a paddle you are going to have stuck into the flume  at the bottom of the W Wheel  (undershot)...???

I'll start looking into that also , But last year we were flooded , so Im digging in 1000' of 6" & 400' of 4" of water collection  Pipe .
Thats to have to water  under the grass & moving .
Im looking at PMA 3 phase  48Vdc  high output : http://www.ebay.com/itm/231171000301?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

I need to dig in water relief since we had boots only during the wet season of 4 months .
SO build to harvests & deal with it.
Any ideas always welcome

what is your property's topography like? Soil type?  Clay layer or silt? Boggy?  etc, etc.

Top 6" is dirt , sand to 7' and then clay on first hard pan . I have 4 wells on Ranch. I drilled all.
this last year we were we not just squishy we were + 4 " of water.
Shallow well is just below ground at first hard pan of clay .

Im just thinking putting in 1k of pipe , harvest some with an underneath 6 foot wheel , Drain from that already in to ditch.
That was huge + ..

Im working on it , but brain farts & ideas  will smarten up & change direction ..

CDN-VT,

Check out the free waterwheel design plans for the Mitchell-Banki Turbine waterwheel from Oregon State University Mechanical Design Engineering Labs.

Low head big flow design that's much like a squirrel cage fan. Can be home built with welding steel plates and 72 degrees segments of steel pipe........reasonably high RPM.....maybe 700 rpm...good efficiency.......and very trash resistant.

I built one in the 80's 24" wide by 12" dia  welded steel...belt drive to generator.....got 10 hp!  It still exists in the Sierra Nevada mountains

Very cool idea David.
Thanks !!!that's also get more thoughts going .

Right now water table is at 3' above hard pan (I measure) .and hard pan is 125 foot(2 wells)  & 3rd is 220' last well)  .
My car has green growth (moss) on a blue ride. Were in a rain forest.

Just love the Banki wheel system 4 Me .. Thanks again

hi cdn_vt,
have you come up with anything or are you still mulling around with the idea? you stated you get allot of rain, but these drain pipes are apt to still be somewhat intermittent. if you can muster enough power from it i guess it would be ok as even solar is intermittent. i, myself, have thought of the idea of just a paddle type deal for even a stream and no head to speak of, just the volume. with enough volume you may be able to up the rpms with gears or pulleys. you also didn't mention the terrain other than rain forest. is it sloped, flat, or steep? that can give a boost to the water flow if steep.

niel

i know it's been abnormally raining quite a bit up there lately, but you can't count on that being the case all year long. i'm not really sure if you answered me or not or do i need a certain mushroom and put antennas off of my head to receive your answer? ???

dgd

Haha, very droll, personally I'd go with the mushrooms first  :)

How wide is the water stream?
Many of the old water driven mills from europe/uk had stone pitched approaches to concentrate flows to the water wheels.
Another snippet to think about.
Unless of course the stream width is quite large. ;D
