thanks DGD, I will try some of that.  I have been thinking it is some remnant in memory (somewhere) that is the cause since I was able to connect if I renamed #647 to #4592 's address.

So it appears you are just replugging the ethernet cable from one Classic to the other. Won't work when you do this as the ethernet already expects the first ip number from that port and just changing cable to a different ip addressed device does not mean the new ip address is automatically recognised.
This is proved by the fact you need to change the ip number to original to get new Classic to be recognised.

Really simple solution is to get a low cost 4 port ethernet hub and plug laptop and both Classics' ethernets into it.

thanks for making me think outside the box [_] I might have a solution...just have to use the Honda 1000W i genset for AC...  inverter not in play as yet.

If an old (replaced) Netgear wifi router with 4 slots will work I have a solution...

OOPs I'll need a longer Cat5 for one of them as the Classics are ~ 8 feet apart...

will advise

WB,

Netgear wi-fi router will work as will netgear 4port switch, these really run on 12 volts so a 5mm connector to cigarette lighter plug is all that is needed  I use Chinese buck converters to supply power to router and hub from 24 volts, flea power,no inverter needed

YaHoo! Success  ;D ;D  at last...  Using the NetGear router, hard wired, I was able to see both Classics using the Local App.

I unplugged and went wireless and it worked upstairs with no apparent loss of  signal as I moved around, mainly just wood in the floor and walls... so no problems expected.

Only one hiccup... >:(    since both Classics are set to STATIC, something changed on the laptop settings(?) and when I went to connect to the net via a different router. I could not connect.  :'(
Had to 'Problem Solve' and turned out to be a reset to DCHP was needed...  works now.

Next is to find a lower power consuming router if I plan to leave it set up long term (or a switch if just checking randomly.)

TD, are you saying these units will not get fried if I send 12V to them?

Mine uses a brick that outputs 5 VDC

WB,

All of my netgear routers are 12 volt DC with 5mm coax power connector with center pin +12 volt,
If yours say 5 volts DC in that is what it uses. The cheap way to deal with this is small buck converter, there are some on Amazon for $3. Or so that can do 12 volt to 5 volt conversion. These are universal and have trim pots on the board to set the output voltage level. I use one of these on each of my low voltage devices running of my 24 volt battery set.

The advantage to using buck converters are that they are way more efficient than an inverter and wall wart. Buck converters are approx. 92-95% efficiency compared to 92% for a good inverter at 2/3 to 3/4 of full load and much less than that when lightly loaded plus the inefficiency of the wall wart.
#2 advantage is very well regulated output voltage

Thats how i do it too. Routers vary, many have a regulator inside, so will accept higher voltages, but better safe than sorry. For $2.

My setup is

laptops )))))                        (((( ))))

classic----switch---------//---------wifi router-----WAN
             |                           |

The switch is only needed because its 15m odd from there to the router.

also ordered up a switch off ebay, so when it gets here I will give it a go rather than the router

DGD, I would need a 60 foot plus CAT5 cable to be able to hard wire the hub in so for now I will let things ride and just do a hard wire peak at the classics with the LApp... we are still in the building stage... full time 120V AC is getting closer

Wb,

Exactly the same problem I had  :)  the Classics are 15+ metres (as the wire goes) away from the router.
Solution is to use a wifi bridge such as the Linksys WET54G (google it).
NOTE:  Bridge and NOT router  :D
Then wire it and two classics to a hub (I would not bother using  a switch as its not needed and a much cheaper hub will be perfect and lower cost)
Your router then communicates to the Classics using its wifi via wifi in the Bridge.

well, another small step forward...    got my 5 slot Switch and it is USB powered so will have to check  how many Amps it can draw max...  Plugged it in and voila up came both  Classics...  Yippee!!!

Now waiting  for  reasonable price on  Bridge to come up on Ebay... within Canada, not USA.

RYAN NOTE PLEASE, 2 time outs while attempting to post this...

UPDATE:

Well the used Linksys bridge came and I attempted to get it going asap.

NOTE, It took a lot of snooping around to find out hoe to access it via my browser as the caned installer is a bunch of junk.  Finally got into it and modified settings as needed.

Tried Connecting with my laptop and was pleasantly surprised that, with the laptop powering the switch via USB and the WET54G plugged into the genny, I was able to snoop the Local  APP wirelessly..

So I went upstairs to test laptop2...???what gives?  Nada !

The only difference was my laptop was set to PUBLIC network and the other laptop was set to HOME Network...

So, foolishly , I set mine to Home as well and VOILA, no connection and now I am unable to retrieve a   connection.

Any  suggestions

Vexed or is it Hexed??? a weekend of hair pulling  in the mid week....

Further investigation shows I can access one Classic if I remove the switch and direct plug it into the bridge.
When I do this I can individually view that single Classic on either laptop , one at a time but not both simultaneously...  Should  I  not be able to view from both at the same time?

Local App:

The Local App should see all classics on a network. There is some limit but only Ryan has that many installed in one location. :o

You can only view a Classic with one device at a time with the Local App

Network issues:

Try powering off everything on the local network and then power it all up.

I avoid "cheap" switches as they can be problematic if you move stuff / dual boot etc.

I suspect the switch has become confused and rebooting it may help.

Just an idea.

Well the overnight shut down did just that I guess...should have thought of that simple cure. Thanks Tom..

when I powered everything up,with both laptops set to HOME Network, I was able to use the LA...on ONE PC at a time.  That is the only "drats" I now have.
