Title: Flipping the 'inerds' of an E panel
Post by: Westbranch on June 24, 2013, 08:34:47 PM
Well there I was out at the cabin,  with Classic and Epanel MNE175 ST (for an Outback) in hand and reading the installation manual for the Epanel , where is says that the Cl should be mounted on the RIGHT hand side so that the heat sink is out in the open.
OOPS, my Epanel has the main breaker on the right side...??... OK, it should be on the left side for use with the Classic...
read a few more lines and it tells me that swapping things around CAN be done but it's not easy to do in the field...

So I started to move stuff, but i noticed that the 'flipping' will get more complex as I have the bypass breakers in the upper right corner.

Questions:
Is there a video of thee swapping process?
Does everything have to be swapped around? I am hoping that just the main breaker, shunt, and  grounding bar , (currently just below the top of the 175A breaker ) are all that is needed to be moved.

Ryan?

I have never tried just flipping the main breaker? To flip it all, you would also need a new door. I would not do it unless it is really required. It is very confusing. Even our assembly people have trouble building a right hand unit after doing lefties for weeks at a time.

thanks robin, I am a bit confused as the manual says that the Classic should be mounted on the right side (looking at the Epanel) so that the heat sink is on the outside.

However in the manual EPanel Instructions there are several examples of both right and left hand mounts...

So which is right or is it just "better" to mount the Classic on the right side for best cooling?

PS FYI... there are still some of the wiring charts showing the Delta 302R Arrestor... ???

thanks robin, I am a bit confused as the manual says that the Classic should be mounted on the right side (looking at the Epanel) so that the heat sink is on the outside.

I did not go back and reread the instructions but I thought they were talking about a different charge controller? MX60 maybe?

The Classic seems symetrical on the "fins" on the case. I have both methods in use with no ill results.

left hinged, right hinged E-Panels with the FX2524s on each mounted towards the hinge. So one Classic is to the left and one to the right of the FX2524s.

I found the instructions very confusing the way it jumps from one configuration to another in the same block of text Once I got doing it it all came together, however.

Just from here.

Tom, last week I moved my temp setup to it permanent location and swapped out the MX.  ::)
Now I have 2 Cl 150's working on separate banks  ;D

According to the Instructions the Classics and MX/FM series all are right hand mount preferred, small wonder since boB had a lot to do with both...

Ya I too think the 'book' could do with a reorg/rewrite to simplify it and clarify it. Part of it is different models and applications.

It reads like there were a lot of scribes  :-\, all at different places and times with different skills ...

I am still looking for advice on whether it is necessary to move the AC bypass breakers to 'the other side'  to meet NEC issues or is it OK to flip the DC only??

As far as I can see there is lots of clearance , possibly need a separator between AC & DC?

Midnite provides a plastic spacer to fit between the AC and DC breakers (it's a thin piece of black plastic).  The spacers should have been included with the E-Panel; if they weren't, Midnite will ship them to you.

+1 on the manual needing a rewrite.
