Title: Which type of wire to use in Epanel
Post by: Westbranch on July 05, 2013, 12:51:23 PM
I am wiring up an Epanel and need to add a couple of breakers & #6 ga. wires for my PV input.

The AC  transfer switch is wired with THHN , so I was looking for that but I cannot source it locally.

Will RW90 be acceptable?

Similarly can I use #4 STW battery cable, it's flexible rather than stiff, for the run to the Classic?

I am assuming that there would be minimum stress at the attachment points.

From US Wire & Cable
STW
Extra hard service cord. Thermoplastic constructed jacket. 600 volt, weather resistant for outdoor use.

Hi wb,

We are in different countries.   RW90 appears to be 90 degree C XLPE.  Which is good stuff.  In the US,  cables that are run in interior spaces usually need VW1 fire rating.  Was unable to see if RW90 has that,  if it is important to you or inspectors.  Here THHN is hyper common,  but you are in the outback IIRC.

On the STW,  if it is flexible,  it may not fit in the Classic's terminal block,  which may be sized for #4 AWG maximum,  but perhaps ONLY for 7 to 19 conductor cable composition -- that terminal block certainly does not accommodate Finely Stranded cable.  Would also wonder about the temp rating of STW.  Although,  some manufacturers claim to make STW to a 105 degree C rating.

And there are possible conduit fill considerations for these conductors if that applies to your situation.

You might ask this on the N AZ Forum,  as Robin and crew are probably very busy now getting ready for that Show.

Above just guesses,  as usual.  Good Luck,  and have fun getting the new system on-line.    Vic

Hi West,
To wire Classic breakers on a E-Panel, I use THHW (600V 105°C sun and oil resistant) 6AWG In and 4AWG OUT (when needed), it is flexible enough and can be found easily in Canada.
Just to help,
Erik

Thanks Erik, I spoke to a friend that works at EB Horsemans, the local electrical Wholesaler yesterday about THHN/W.
He looked it up and found that it is meant for TRAY use, hence why it is so rigid... and the specs are the same, 90* rated, just that the THHN has thinner insulating material, and a slipperier coating for pulling through conduits.

His recommendation (also) was use RW90 as it is designed for colder climates, that's why it is so common around here.
