Title: New Classic 200 with the Fan cable crushed/broken
Post by: clockmanFrance on November 09, 2013, 03:50:58 PM
I am just fitting this new MidNite Solar Classic 200 for my latest 2Kw PV Solar Tracker, (Tristar do not do a controller that can handle 2 strings of 4 panels per Tracker, about 160vdc), and yes this Classic 200 cost me a 733 euro,  faint .

Any way I have just put the temp sensor on one of my batteries, as recommended, and installed the 20mm/sq cable and the 24vdc tracker power feed into the Tracker control box.

Opened the Classic 200 to see where the cables, battery temp sensor etc fit, and I find the Fan cable has been crushed/sliced by the aluminium casing.

Looks like my Sunday is repairing the cable with solder and glue lined heat shrink. There is sufficient cable length to do an effective repair. If this was Chinky Made I would expect things like this, but An American made, Stickers all over saying "Made in USA" ?

I only hope that if the case shorted out the fan circuit, when under test at the manufacturing plant, that it has NOT done permanent damage to the main board. ?

Can you PM me a couple things.

1-what is the serial#?
2-Who signed of on the QC checklist. There should be 2 signatures. If they are not readable a picture of it will help greatly

Sorry for the sloppy workmanship there is no excuse for this and I promise to rattle the appropriate heads  8)

Just had the Mrs onto me, she says, "If it is NEW and you repair those 2 cables and the controller no longer works you have no WARRANTY".

Gulp!  :'(

No worries I promise you have a warranty. I can also send you a new fan and wires if you prefer. Totally up to you.

Hi Ryan, And many, many thanks for your kind and quick response.

I will unplug the two cables from the main board and effect a repair.

Thanks for the offer of a new fan and cables, but I will try a repair first.  Here in France any item coming from the USA is very slow and goes through a strict Customs examination and charges.

"No worries I promise you have a warranty", thanks for the reassurance.

Clockman;

They will honor the warranty on that I am certain. Mistakes happen even in the best of manufacturing plants but  I am confident Ryan (halfcrazy) will get it straightened out for you. Ah, I see he posted as I was composing this.

Good Luck with it.

Tom

Hi Tom.

Thanks for the reassurance.

As you can see I am also on most other World wide Forums, but particularly this European Sustainable Forum.

This is my first venture into MidNite products, I have 7off Tristar's, so was at first disappointed, but service and help is very, VERY important.

As you can gather members on the Navitron Forum are impressed.

Leslie.

international distributors suck they charge you for the manufacturers warranty and dishonors the warranty as distributors indirectly.i asked a similar question concerning warranty midnite Bob assured me they will honour the warranty provided you pay shipping cost i have no quarrels with that just with those guy that buys the stuff to sell in other countries do as they are suppose to because they put all of it t in their price.

That wire, if you found it that way when you first opened it up, would have come
from final Classic boxing and after final testing was done on the Classic.

Luckily you found it then.  What would most likely happen if it were left that
way, depending on if the system negative is bonded to the ground, would
probably not hurt anything.  The fan might not turn off while the black
wire is grounded and the 13 or 14V that drives the fan may short out
if the red wire is grounded.  If the red wire gets grounded, the fan
would not come on and the classic may not function while grounded
but otherwise should be OK.

If it were my Classic, I would probably just tape the exposed area but
clipping off the extra wire and re-wiring it to a connector will work also.

Sorry for this.  That should not have happened of course.

Pic 1.......All repaired, tinned about 4mm each, then soldered together, then Glue lined heat shrink.

Pic 2...... The Classic 200 Installed and working taking 160v from my New design 2kw PV Tracker. Yes its a Tristar MPPT along side, it does the 2 off 1.5kw PV Trackers.

Pic 3...... Really rubbish dull and raining day today here in Normandy France, but still getting over 500w from my Trackers.
