Title: Minimum panel Vmp for Kid at 12v
Post by: citysnaps on August 27, 2014, 02:25:23 PM
Right now I'm experimenting with a Kid and 12v AGM battery to get acquainted with the controller. I'll eventually purchase a panel in the 200-300 range (Vmp around 30v), and, with a couple of 100 AH AGM batteries, that will become the basis for the electrical system for an RV van conversion I'll be doing early next year.

For now, I have access to a 100w panel with Vmp= 17.7v. I know that is probably not high enough for proper MPPT operation. It still seems to work, though producing less power.

Question: What is the minimum Vmp needed for proper/reliable operation?

Thanks...

If the kid turns on and it is producing power then it is High enough.
there is not a concrete voltage I can give you since it depends on the battery voltage Input mode and other variables.

The Kid will not get damaged if the input voltage is too low.

Thanx, Mario - appreciate it…

With respect to Input Mode, I currently have it set to the default, Solar Learn.  Considering the relatively low Vmp panel I'm using for the moment now, is that still the best mode to use?

Since you are so close to the Battery voltage there is no reason to use Fast sweeping Solar, I would recommend Using Solar 2 O&P it will behave better.
