Hi all
I am setting up my dump load for a new Bergey XL1.  I'll be using a 1 kw 120volt baseboard heater and wonder about pwm's effects (if any) on my inverter.  Since Robin and boB were instrumental in the design of the Xantrex 4048 inverters and the Classic 250, I'm wondering if the pwm function rather than on-off aux 1 will be fine with the inverter.

I have the same dump loading running off my Outback MX60 and when the solar input is petering out the jump up and down in the load on the inverter worries me.

So, will pwm activity be all right or not for the inverter?  (not up and running yet)

Well, looks like my worries were groundless, works okay with the inverter it seems.

Question is, why does the Classic Aux Waste Not Hi setting keep the diversion load "on" when logic dictates that it should have shut off? 

Turns on when absorb is reached, but stays on when absorb cycle is complete and voltage is dropping towards float.  Also stays on when a cloud event will cause the voltage to drop below absorb level.

Turbine is not installed yet, just using the Classic to control dumping excess solar at present.  Am I missing something, like how long to have absorb time limit set?  Something else?  Transitioning from a 2004 era MX60 as dump load controller is vexxing me.

Diversion only works around the absorb point, not the 3 regulating charge points (absorb, float, eq), correct?

Waste Not should definitely work around the voltage regulation set points.  Battery temperature compensated
of course.

If using Aux 2, what is your width and the relative voltage adjustment ?   The relative V adjustment
should typically be a volt or two negative if width is 1.0 volt.  Set the set-point voltage in the CHARGE
menu slightly high so that the PWM can do its thing and use the actual set-point voltage for Absorb and
Float as a fail-safe adjusted slight higher than wanted.

My MX60 settings are Abs 58.8, Float 53.

I'll set the Classic up at 1 volt width, -1.5v relative, Abs 59.2 and Float 54.4...see how those figures work.

Right now I have  a toggle switch before the relay and it has an led in the end of it...gives a bright red indication of whether the Classic is pwm-ing, or on or off.

OK, what if you bring your relative -1.5V setting to say, -2.0 volts ?  Is it PWMing ?

Also, if you set the LED mode to Mode 1, 2 of the 3 inside behind the cover of the Classic LEDs
will indicate whether the Aux 1 and/or Aux 2 outputs are putting out voltage.

How far below the set point is the Aux staying on ?   Actually, if you have battery
temperature compensation hooked up, you may not know this exactly unless
you go to the CHARGE --- T-Comp --- VIEW menu which will show the exact
voltage target at any given time and temperature.

Another thing.  If you haven't checked yet, press "status" 3 times until you see
the WB Jr. menu, even if you do not have one connected up.  Press the SETUP
key and then MORE I think.... Make sure that the battery temperature reference
is 25.0 degrees C and not 10 C.  Unless your batteries are referenced to another
temperature.  I this is low (some units were not defaulted to 25.0), might be
bringing the temp comp set target down too low which would look kind of like
this.

boB on target again.  The temp compensation was defaulted to 10C.  Changed to 25C and it appears to be working.  The pwm action starts at 1 volt or .8 volts from the targeted float voltage.

I'd read that same fix somewhere in the forum, but didn't know it applied to me.  Kinda hidden away in the WBjr menu area.

Also, I don't have any input yet, no turbine up.  Can you force the Classic to bulk or float like the OB MX60?  That's handy.  I have seen the BLK and FLOat in the TWEAKS area, but ___ under them, can you force  the controller down to float, or re-bulk?

OK, yes, in the TWEAKS menu where you see the ___  under BLK and FLT...   Highlight the words, press UP or DOWN
and notice they briefly change to "OK" which means it should have forced a bulk or float.

Thanks boB.  A handy feature appreciated as much as the Toggle in Aux.  Nice to be able to check something's function and not accidentally leave the controller in the wrong aux function.

In the brackets your opening "quote" has "/quote" the / is for the end quote the plain "quote" is the opening

I have been trying to make the Aux 2 PWM diversion work for me reliably but without much success. I have embarked upon building an Arduino based PWM diversion system but that is going to take a lot of my time and resources  to get it working. Maybe I am missing something in this topic.

I do not have a WBjr installed at this time. When I go to the Battery temp compensation screen on the WBjr I see - Battery capacity temperature compensation with the default temperature at 0. When I change the temperature the battery capacity %change/C changes on a 1 to 1 basis. So if I set the temperature at 25 then it tells me that my battery capacity changes 25% per degree C. This is amount of capacity change does not occur. So I left the temp set at 0 but wonder if there is something here I am missing that is causing the Aux2 PWM diversion to work so poorly.  ????

What's it doing, or not doing?  You don't mention how much load you have or how much PV.  This might help.

We've been using waste-not for a while, and it works great from my perspective.  I'll double-check tonight but after some fine-tuning, I believe ours is set for -1.4V relative and 3 volts width.

I' m not using or familiar with WBjr, but I believe our temp comp is set at -5mV.

Away on a trip for 6 weeks, the system worked fine while away.  Instead of heat dumping through relays and baseboard heaters I purchased a Clipper.  Much better arrangement. 

I do like the on/off/selected function available in the aux mode.  For Clipper Control I can turn it "on" and it effectively brakes the turbine reducing the whistling noise if you're sitting outside and don't want to hear it.  Better than just shorting the leads for braking...then the turbine and wire are not heating,  the clipper control is heating the resistors in the Clipper.

Now, if only Midnite had an  inverter to replace my aging Xantrex SW unit.
