Title: How NOT to advertise a battery, even if it's Li ion....
Post by: Westbranch on April 30, 2015, 09:27:32 PM
Look closely at the tops of these AA (AAA?) cells, What are they trying to tell us about small batteries?

I'll give the benefit of the doubt and say the e-magazine pulled a stock photo from someplace.

Don, did you get to the part about the "Musk Utility" or possibly the "TESLA Utility"  ??? :o

Was that in the video?  Not watched as I'm using my phone data and don't do videos on my (limited) data.

yes, you have to go through the first video and then there is a selection, and that is the second link I posted, refers t how the MUSK grid might work... hypothetically...

Little too big for the houseboat  The size is 130 cm (51.2 inches) high, 86 cm (34 inches) wide and 18 cm (7.1 inches) deep.

Gotta love this quote:

the issue with existing batteries is they suck.

I would add "hard" at the end.

But wow, $3500 for 10 kWh of Li ion battery?  (http://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2015/05/01/teslas-new-powerwall-home-battery-will-cost-3500-for-10kwh-units/)  If that is 10kWh of usable energy then that is on par with quality deep cycle flooded LA batteries on a $ per usable kWh basis - even without any rebate.

I know they're not targeting current off-gridders or those with already installed battery back up systems but the possibilities are intriguing..

Lots of technical questions remain:  What is the nominal pack voltage and is it compatible with the quality charge controllers and inverters currently on the market?  if not will Tesla also be marketing a charge controller and inverter with it?  Does that price include an integrated BMS?  What will be the parameters for depth of discharge and cycle life? Warranty?

ADD: Oops - I see now it says 400V nominal. Well that means off gridders and those with battery back up systems are SOL.  Would need serious buck converting down to the 24-48V nominal most people are currently using.  New market for high voltage CCs and inverters?  String reconfiguring?... Oh well.

For all you hear about the man, and what hes acheiived, I wasnt overly impressed with his presentation, both verbal coherance or the technical material.

The wired video reponse, does raise the obvious point that the powerwall, shares the trait of all other battery/hybrid systems, as being stilll noneconomic.

This MIT interview with him is worth watching. His answers to the audience questions at the end are enlightening I think. His breadth of knowlegde is impressive IMO.  The whole Powerwall battery thing does raise all kinds of questions. It will be interesting to see what comes from this.
