Can the classic be updated without a computer?

No not really . You need to feed the update in via Classic's  usb update port and a Windows computer works best or is the one supported to do that .

I thought that maybe update could be downloaded to a thumb drive and then to the classic.? It works for updating outback mate 3

Sorry.  The Classic does not have USB host capability.
