Title: Classic keeps restarting in evening
Post by: David on June 20, 2020, 12:00:38 AM
My classic constantly keeps restarting in the evening now.  It will restart, do the resting for 15 seconds, then turn off and back on again, repeating the process.  Any ideas?

Hi David,

It is common for Classics that use PVs as a power source,   in the early AM,   and in the evening,  when the light is low  --  barely enough power produced,  to allow the Classic to make any meaningful power,  for it to  wake up a number times.,   see that there is little power available,    rest,   and so on   You will hear the input relay click a number of times,   as this process continues.

If there is not more than about 10 - 15 watts of available power,   the Classic will rest for a while,   and try again in a minute or two.   After a period of time,  it will just Rest.

Do you think that this is what you are seeing?

This is the entire system shutting off and on.. LCD goes blank, then on, welcome screen, fans kicks up for a bit, and so on.. Not the normal behavior you are describing.

OK David,

Sorry,   guessed incorrectly.

When you said,   "This is the entire system shutting off and on",   exactly what is shutting off/on,   besides the Classic?

What is the battery voltage that you are seeing when you see this reboot?

Is this Classic using only Solar,   as the source of charge power?

By any chance,   are you doing any Modbus Writes to the Classic?

TIA,   Vic

Sounds kind of like the internal auxiliary power supply messing up.

But it could be a bad connection ?  Turn off the battery and PV breaker, take the top off and push that top PCB in to make sure it
is plugged in all the way to the power board underneath.  Then turn it on and try again.

If the voltage at the battery terminals is good, greater than 10 volts and it is still actin up,  then maybe it's time to call support on Monday morning.

- When I said "entire system is shutting off", I did mean just the Classic.. the Outback inverter is fine.
- I'll double check the battery voltage
- only solar
- not doing any writes or even reads from classic.. just using the display on the classic

The internal battery must be dead..  It does keep saying set date/time and I have set it again recently... could this be causing it?

Hi boB,

Thanks for the reminder about that internal PS,   always forget about it,   and its effects.

David,   thanks for the added info.

On all Classics with the MNGP,   that CR 1216 coin cell just backs up,   the TOD clock in the MNGP.   That battery,  by itself,  being low/dead should have no direct effect on the behavior that you are seeing-IMO.   The effect of incorrect TOD on Classic behavior,  --  the repeated reboots in the eve,   seems remote to me,   but,  this is for others to judge.

As boB noted,   a very loose connection on the battery side of the Classic could cause this,   but,  why only in the eve?

If the main battery was very dead,   but with some PV input,   this might cause this rebooting,   but the Classic only needs about 8 VDC minimum to begin operating,   and,   IIRC,   your system uses a 48 V battery.

If an Aux output (in voltage mode)  was overloaded,   it might cause it,   and the cycling could be caused by the built-in PTC overload protector could be the thing driving the cycling   â€¦   as boB touched on   â€¦

Dunno,   really have nothing to add.   Good Luck David.      Vic

Still happening tonight.  Voltage is 49.3.  After resting for 15s LCD goes blank, starts up again with Midnite solar logo, leds blink, fan kicks on, and starts cont down again from 15 seconds in Rest mode.  I believe it started once there was 0 watts coming in.  Even when array was in shade before sun set it was getting 15 watts or so and would switch to bulk and not restart.  I also switched to utility power before sunset so there was no load on the system.
