Title: MN15-12KW-aio off grid house
Post by: OVGregG on December 11, 2024, 11:13:01 PM
Please rate/berate my proposed system. This project is for my house. The house is on-grid now. I'm fortunate to be living in Hawaii where the climate does not require any HVAC beyond a few ceiling fans and open windows.  My major loads: range, dryer, hot water, are all propane now I'll migrate them to electric as convenient. I plan to cut the cord, no grid-tie.

MidNite MN15-12KW-aio All in One
2 or 3x of MNPowerflo16 batteries
Maybe 8 KW of PV panels in one or two strings.

Mostly I'm looking for thoughts on the MidNite AIO. Is it adequate to run a house? How's that 20KW Peak Output Apparent Power work out with an electric range and dryer? I can shed the water heater.

If you get a heat pump water heater that will probably be doable. There are also heat pump clothes dryers too. Induction cooking range might be more efficient - not sure on that, but they will heat up faster and not leave a hot surface. Those would be your biggest loads so if you upgrade to those should be okay with your plan. You will have to look at those appliances and see what their energy draw is. Energy Star has webpages where you can look up and compare the energy usage. There are also federal tax credits ( and possibly rebates)  for some of those appliances and the solar system and batteries.
Your proposal seems like it would work , but look at your present energy bill and compare. If you get sun most of the time and most of the year you won't be like us northerners having short days right now ( and cold ! ). Many of us oversize our system so we can get through December and January without having to run the generator too much or at all. In summer and other times of the year we have an abundance of power .

Welcome to the forum OVGregG!

I'm not sure how your water is delivered to your house, but is there some kind of pump involved? Or are you using water from a manucipal supply? Some pumps have large surge requirements.

Thanks for the thoughts Ed. My pump, and UV sterilizer (and refrigerator and a shop full of tools) are on a separate solar system I setup about 5 years ago. That's working great, it gave me confidence to look into the house solar project.  That system is running MidNite Classic charge controller and Schneider inverter. This MidNite AIO seems to be pretty good bang for the buck. Aloha, Greg.

Thanks Larry for the thoughts. Yes I'll lean towards a more energy efficient range and clothes dryer. I don't think the hybrid/heat pump water heater is necessary since I can shed that load when the range demands. I don't cook all the time :). Because I'm starting with existing propane appliances my day-one demand will be minimal and I'll be able to scale that up one appliance at a time. The purpose of my post was a sanity check. Running my house on this all-in-one seems like a good fit. Thanks again.

Aloha,
-Greg.

I don't know the full specs for the new MN15 all in one ,  but if the controller has the capability you can always expand the PV amount and add extra battery if you don't have enough.
