Title: Forced Battery Charging
Post by: Steve777 on March 25, 2025, 10:54:03 PM
So I ran into a problem, trying to turn on forced battery charging last nite; finally got it to work but after quite a few tries, by both myself and my installer; and we still are unsure of what it was that actually worked. Here's what we did, and some possibilities of what might have actually worked. I wanted to ask here, as I think this might be good to know for The One owners who are faced with an upcoming grid outage.

Basically I learned there was going to be a planned grid outage, all day long the following day. Not a big deal, except that we typically have the time slots programmed to draw the battery down over night. So I wanted to turn on "Charge By Grid" (which is usually off), and turn on "Force Charge" (again usually off) thinking this would start charging the batt from the grid to top it off for the next morning and the outage. I made those changes and waited, but no change to the battery flow (~50-100W flowing in, same as it had before my changes). I turned off the time slots, thinking perhaps they were influencing it, but again no changes. Getting a bit nervous, I called my installer and asked him to look at it thinking he might have access to other settings. He tried a few things and turned time slots back on, but still no luck. About 45mins or so later I went back via the web app to see what was going on, and indeed now it was charging the battery at ~2500w (the level of the current time slot's forced charge).

So I (we if you include my installer) are trying to figure out what finally worked to get the inverter to "see" the forced charge and charge from grid settings. Was it the turning off then on of the time slots? Did we just not wait long enough for the changes to be read and applied, and we just needed more patience? If one suddenly feels the need to force charge the battery, what is the proper procedure to effect that, and how long does one wait for it to go into action?

This is something I'd like to know, and suspect will be useful for other owners.

TIA

if you know or suspect a Grid outage coming... you should be able to change:

power control > timebase control = disable , so that discharge doesn't happen on regular schedule
battery > charge by grid = enable
battery > force charge = enable
battery > stop charging = 100%

.... and don't expect to see charging start right away on the web or App, remember that the screen updates are probably only every 5 minutes.

.... also note that the "force charge" only stays enabled one time, then resets to be disabled

Yes, those were the settings I first tried, to no effect. How quickly should the change happen?

And I should add, I double checked the setting changes and they were there. Just no change in the inverter behavior from them.

I have changed a few things that took a good ten minutes to "happen". I have used the Grid "force charge" a couple times, and it took a few minutes to show in the data on screen

You might want to check the "reboot" times under the Grid section. The default is ten minutes, but you can change it to 10 seconds.... that MIGHT help, but I dunno for sure.

Also note Force Charge was added in later firmware so depending on the age of the machine if it hasnt been updated force charge may not work.

Thanks dtbaker61 and FNG.

FWIW, I had changed the reboot times to 10s back when first commissioning the inverter. Just checked and they are still set to 10s. And the inverter had been pulling power from the grid prior to setting force charge, so the grid should have been "qualified" already.

FNG, can you tell us what version of FW is needed for Force Charge? Currently running V5 (aka 020406), should it work there?

Just to close this up, upgraded to FW 0206A5 and force charge now seems to be working. It does require you to turn Charge by Grid on (if there is no PV coming in), but it does charge the batt to full and then turn the setting off.
