New (to me)  the Classic SL CC  Solar Only for fewer $$:

http://www.midnitesolar.com/productPhoto.php?product_ID=620&productCatName=Charge Controllers - Classics&productCat_ID=21&sortOrder=1&act=p

Appears to have MNGP,  but perhaps no Arc-Fault detector,  but may include the WBjr ...

Will need to dig deeper ...      Vic

Hi Wb,  but was referring more to the Arc-Fault detector,  which is probably not there,  as opposed to Ground Fault.

For the Standard Classics,  Arc-Fault protection is on the list of features/functions.

As I see it,  anyway.   Vic

So the differences between a Classic and a Classic-SL:

1- No AF
2- Battery temp sensor is optional (not included)
3- No Ethernet (Still does Modbus over serial)
4- Solar only (Greatly simplified menus)
Changing the way wind turbines operate one smoke filled box at a time

Hi Ryan,

Thank you very much for the info on the differences twix the SL,  and Standard Classics.

You guys have a great stable of very capable Charge Controllers.  Great Job!
Thanks,   Vic

No ethernet  :)  but still has serial port and modbus.
Sounds just what I need to interface to my serial/modbus connecting web server.
But where do you get one?
I cant find them advertised by any of the usual retailers and it will probably be months before they are available in New Zealand.

I sure like the idea of a solar only classic. But no arc fault protection; that's a mistake. Especially when in many places in the US it is starting to be required.

Arc fault protection in the controller will detect a series arc fault, but not a parallel arc fault.  I believe that the ideal approach is to have arc fault detection in the combiner, in which case arc fault detection in the controller is redundant.

Speaking of which, what ever happened to the Midnite arc fault combiner that was advertised with a full page ad in Home Power a couple of years ago?

Arc fault is headed to UL finally!! We are looking at sending it in 3 ways;
1- Classic
2- Combiners
3- Stand alone detector

I understand what a Classic or combiner will do if it detects an arc fault.  But what will a stand alone detector do if it detects a fault?  And will it be able to detect both series and parallel faults?

Is there a Classic SL Lite available?
I don't really need an mngp.

Did just see SLs at Colorado Solar (SPS):

Know that Colorado is NOT NZ.   Vic
