Choosing the proper Classic

We are running a 10 foot turbine built to the Otherpower specs.  It is running into a 48V bank and uses the older, weaker rectangular magnets.  I don't know what open circuit voltage this thing would produce, so I'm not sure if the 150V Classic would suffice.  I intend to build Ryan's clipper substitute.  I don't want to end up having the turbine shut down all the time in relatively modest winds.  If the turbine isn't likely to hit 150V except in relatively rare high wind events, then I will move forward.  Otherwise, I suppose it would probably be better to wait for a real clipper.

Any thoughts?

Thanks...

I have run that exact same turbine here for over 2 years on a Classic my turbine was wound for a 48 volt battery. The highest I have seen is about 250vdc open circuit. It is a tough call which model to go with I was very happy with my 150vdc Classic and I had my power curve set to go to 140vdc. The Classic will hold the turbine down all the time as long as the battery's do not get full or the Classic current limits do to being maxed out on capacity.

I have had great success with my home brew voltage clamp. You will want to build the Voltage clamp as the Classic 150v will not take the open circuit voltage of the turbine. The Relay I used to fire the clamp has an auto reset feature as well as a latching feature I have had good luck with it in the auto reset mode I think it takes about 15 minutes and has to see a lower voltage than it unlocks the turbine. Our Clamp gets a work out anytime we have 40mph or better winds our 17ft other power turbine over drives 2 Classics that is 9kw and fires and the 17ft turbine slows to a stop with no violent bangs or anything.

Thanks for the quick and thoughtful reply...

Do you have a stock number/source for the relay you are using?

Thanks!

We will be able to do this for you with the aux relay in the Classic saving you the headache or expense of this relay but I will dig it up if needed

I see, so the Aux relay on the Classic has a progammable hysteresis of some sort like what you might find on a Xantrex inverter Aux relay?

If so, then that works too!

Thanks again...
