I can get the XW6848 at a reasonable price, but the distribution box is almost $2k, would I not be better off with a midnite E panel?

Yes, the midnight epanel is a very nice piece of gear, and it has enough space to put your PV DC breakers and controller breakers in it too.

Before you spend any $ on gear, While the XW has a Load Shave mode, I have not used it.  (I'm totally off grid) I can help you with generator support modes, but not the Load Shave.

And with Load Shave, you still NEED batteries, 100Ah for each KW you expect as loads when the batteries are full and the sun is shining.   If you have a 4KW array, expect to need about 400ah of battery.  Not enough battery to smooth out the ripple, and the caps in the inverter overheat.

(edit - change EXPORT to LOADS)

So I can;t use the load shave feature without the battery size as you said I need?  Or are we just taking about a power supply like I started this post off on?

if you want a battery based inverter to do much inverting, it needs BATTERY to smooth out the ripple. A power supply is unlikely to be able to do that, until you get to the $5K class of lab supplies

You could try a PS and a couple of fused stacks of Car Audio Farad caps, but if you overheat the internal caps, you have to have batteries.

OK forget the PS idea, can I use load sheading with 100AH battery bank?

A 100ah battery can support 1Kw of inverter load. otherwise, you start getting ripple effects.   Possibly, AGM batteries with their lower internal resistance, a 100ah bank could possibly support 3Kw of load shaving.

Looks like The conext SW inverter has load shaving and, I will probably go that route, but if I use a midnite classic I won;t communicate with it. So I will have to use the crappy mppt 150. New firmware out have a look:
