Hi
I am running the classic monitor by Graham Ross on my Android, it works inside my home network but cannot get it to work outside my network.
I went the port forwarding route with no luck, I have an all in one Uverse router/gateway that does not support the hosting part of Graham instructions.
I heard you can use 2 Androids device  to do remote monitoring outside my network with MQTT hosting.

Can someone help me set this up, or point me in the right direction, I registered for the MQTT account, but don't know what to do next

Thank you

Rich Martin

There is a forum discussion on Ross's  MQTT monitoring app so take a look.
http://midniteftp.com/forum/index.php?topic=4464.0

Also there is a new MQTT app that is being developed that will work with either ESP32 talking to Classic or Raspberry Pi talking to the Classic . And then you can use Android to monitor . That discussion is here

Yes if you get MQTT working with remote server ( many are out there for free) then you shouldn't have to open any ports.

I'm a apple fan boy. If I were to purchase a used Android device,  I don't need the phone part of it, what should I look for? Graham Ross software is impressive enough to push me to buy an android just for his app.

I like his App also, I am also apple, but in 2018 I saw his app on a YouTube video and I went out and bought a Samsung tablet just for this app and been using since.
I see Walmart having a sale on Android I am going to get another.

thanks for the info Mike

Any  android( from last 5 to 8 years )  should work and you should be able to be able to pick up a cheap tablet for $30 to $50 new.
Should be deals on ebay. Send me a personal message on here and I can give you some tips.
Also ask around - people upgrade and have their old ones sitting around that they will give you -- you can assure them that  you will wipe them all their info first ( send me personal message on here and I can go into details).
I think you can also just use android emulator program on Windows computer - been awhile since I did that but I think it worked. Dedicated Android is a bit more convenient though.

I could not get it to work, I was trying to setup the tablet as the publisher and the phone as the subscriber but they not talking to each other.
Also on the tablet whenever I turn on the MQTT for some reason I cannot connect to the classic.
The tablet is much older than the phone.

info on tablet.

Android version 4.4.4
Kernel version
3.10.17-1172664
dpi@SWHE2616#2
Thu Jan 19 17:16:16 KST 2017

Phone info

Android version 8.1.0
September 1,2019
Kernel version 3.18.71.
Build OPM1.171019.019

you guys think if I get a second phone it might work?, because the Bata version seems to run better on the phone, it is very glitchy on the tablet.

Maybe go over to the opensource area of the forums and open up a new topic there . But basically if you have the first mqtt version of Grahams monitoring app - you need to have both publisher - then go to a mqtt broker in the middle , and the subscriber monitoring app is at the end where you see the info.

The newest versions they are working on now has a Raspberry Pi work as both the mqtt publisher ( gets data from classic ) and the mqtt broker ( gathers and sends out data to subscriber mqtt app on android - or to other devices )
