I have a question about my Midnite 250. I'm still learning the this stuff...

I've seen as much as 10.5 kWh registered on the controller and as low as around 7 kWh with VERY similar sun days. Does the controller only harvest what the batteries need? Would the excess be net metered back to the grid if I was on the grid?

I guess I just answered my own question but want to get thing straight in my head.

I see there is a software version update from what I'm running and wonder it at my basic level would it be wise to install the update or just run it the way it is for a while. Is there a operational advantage to go going to the latest version? the unit is only about 6 months old...

Hi Paul,

Believe that you are off-grid.
If you are OG,  then the CC should only deliver and record what is needed by the batteries + any other loads like those of the inverter(s),  and any DC loads you have connected directly to the batts.

Hi Paul , With regards to your harvest figures Yes you have answered your own question ! I have 3.4 Kw of Solar 2/3 fixed South & 1/3 Tracked, I get over 300 days a year of Fully charged  batteries. I see a average harvest of  between 6 and 8 kw hours a day. Thats my average daily consumption taking efficienecies in to account. I have seen up to 14 kw hours go in but thats because I made a previously daily decision depending on next days weather forecast whether to use my back up generator or not and if Id made the right decision. Or if I had decided to do an equalizing charge. Or I had a heavey day of extra loads like construction work or a combination of  all three. If you are regularly hitting float charge then try an equalizing charge and see if that increases your daily harvest over the average, Im sure it will.  If your hitting absorb stages early in the day with sun left over then try and recoup some of that wasted energy by doing power hungry household chores, like getting an extra laundry wash in  ironing or using a slow cooker. As you start to take the power back out of your batt bank for these tasks the Classic with drop out of float or absorb and start feeding that lost power back into your batteries and will record it as extra energy harvested. 

Not a tech answer but an off gridders answer.
As for last part, there is the adage if its not broken dont fix it, which I appauld, but its always nice to have the latest tune up.
