Quote from: aaapilot on July 20, 2024, 07:17:57 PMThanks Larry, Good advice.  I hate having a perfectly good piece of equipment, well other than accessing the Beta server, that goes to waste, so I'll take a look at the XDA site.  I'm not totally geek, but I have my moments! :)

Off topic comment here --  The biggest issue I have with rooting and updating these old phones ( from 2014 or so vintage) is that there can be so many posts and some links don't work so it takes some research. I was using Lineage OS but google recently changed something with security updates or something - so Lineage dropped their OS from many many phones that were being officially supported for years to the newest Andoid versions.  But you can still find the last versions and they work - and maybe since I don't do anything sensitive like banking or messaging much I don't have to worry about it. It is nice to be able to use these older phones that work great - just get rid of the manufacturers OS and it breathes new life into them. People really only get rid of them since the manufacturers quit updating the Android versions in them and then they are pressured to go to the latest and greatest phones. But the latest and greatest now have backs that don't open so you can replace a battery . The new phones are all glued together including the batteries so it is more of a pain to get them apart to replace it - need heat gun to loosen glue and pry them out. So it is just fun hacking the old stuff. I also do the same for older routers - use DDWRT or Fresh Tomato or others to get rid of manufacturers image which don't give you all the features and now force you to log in to their sites , etc. It is a real cat and mouse game with stuff like tablets from Amazon - which they sell cheap and they don't like it when people root their tablets and install different OS . Then Amazon will do some firmware update that will break the ability to root them, then the hackers figure out a new way to get around that , etc. The last tablets I did there is a method to install the new firmware but you need to open up the tablet and short a pin on a chip inside  - ha ha - works ! I am just glad there are smart people out there who figure out how to do all this stuff and share it.

Seems like you make the most out of technology 'castaways', Larry!  Not sure I have your patience & determination :). It's interesting to contrast changes in the solar tech vs electronic tech.  Inverters and solar panels from 2 decades ago still work just as intended, perhaps diminished in efficiency, but still capable.  Yes, new equipment is more efficient and has more options, but that doesn't render the older equipment useless.  Electronic tech on the other hand does become useless, whether it's due to software changes by the manufacturer or infrastructure hardware/software changes that the older tech does not contain.  The first solar system I built in 1999, 100 watt panels, Trace 4048 inverter, 8 - 12 volt batteries making a 48v system, is still in production!  I'm sure the batteries have been changed, but the 3rd owner in 25 years is still reaping the benefits of that hardware w/out any other upgrades/replacements!!!  I'm wary of any solar equipment that may require constant software upgrade to do its primary function or can be controlled by a Utility.  Software/firmware enhancements are great and appreciated, but if required, then no.

Yes I understand what you are saying - some stuff just keeps going.
Some of us local ham radio operators dug out our packet radio modems from the late 1980's and they still work just as good now as then. We used them to communicate via "text" messages over radio before most anyone had heard of internet. Now we have a packet radio network running over 200 miles again ( though not many people use it - ha ha - 1200 baud too slow .
Regarding patience - I just picked up another Motorola android phone. Even though I had installed new OS on them many times in past , this one wouldn't take the update because a driver had changed. It took me many hours over a couple days before I found and figured out how to find and install the correct driver on my windows computer. Then it was just smooth sailing !

I'm having the same/similar issue. Using the Midnite beta upgrade tool on Android, it says "Alert, you are running newest version" on my mngp2 and Rosie. I'm at the following versions:

Rosie: 24.03.15
MNGP2: 24.03.29

Actually, that's the same result I received initially.  But I had downloaded a newer Beta for my old Rosie, so I tried again, and on the 3rd attempt, I got the 'can't connect to the Server' message.  Now that's all I get.  Has the Beta app ever actually worked for you, I.e. found a software newer than what you were using and done an upgrade?  I'm guessing it has because your MNGP2 software is a Beta number; the latest Production software is from Feb 2024.
I'm sorry you are getting 'almost' the same thing, but at least it appears it's not 'just me', so maybe somebody else will chime in.

I did successfully upgrade the mngp2 with the beta tool, no luck on the Rosie, that's running what it shipped with. Not a huge deal breaker it's working fine for me as is.

Based on your Rosie firmware, your Rosie is new.  Mine is too, produced 2Q24, #7205.  Yours is likely newer.  I'm wondering if the issue is with these newer machines, perhaps something with the CANBUS card?  Midnite would know if they've changed any of the internal hardware/software. Maybe Midnite could test a newer machine in their lab to ensure the Beta app works on these? :) :) :)

Also, which Android phone & version are you using?  Mine is an LG Stylus 3+ running Android 7.0.  Hopefully we can work out this issue collectively!

So it's not a newly built unit, April 2023, Midnite opened her up and updated the firmware prior to shipping which was a nice touch. Serial #6670. Bought from Stellavolta, shipped from Washington

Using a Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra running Android 14. I have a work iPhone I can try also but will have to wait till later can't interrupt the wife's afternoon streaming with a Rosie reboot :)

oh mine is the mobile version if that matters

I wouldn't worry about interrupting your bride's viewing habits :). Well, I WOULD worry about it, but in this case, the iPhone app can only update Production firmware, not Beta.  Your Rosie is running the latest Production and your MNGP2 has a more recent Beta, so the iPhone won't find a more recent firmware update.  No ripple in the Force on the home front! LOL

Thanks for the tip on the iPhone not having beta firmware option. I'm not planning on AC coupling or general grid interaction so production should be fine. Hoping to hook it up to the whole house panel this weekend, only been running off a 20A 120V power strip to begin with.
