mymidnite won't take MAC address

I can talk to my Classic Lite 150 using K. Smith's little app and it gave me the device ID and MAC address. I went to www.mymidnite.com and tried to create a new user account and it won't take the MAC address. I thought maybe they wanted the MAC address for my Windows 7 machine but that doesn't work either. I'm wondering how one can create a new account without knowing the MAC address and ID. Kindof a catch-22. You can't get the local app to get to your controller because you can't get to the controller. Is there a version of the local app that you can download that runs on a non-network machine so I can configure my Classic Lite in the field? Since my controller is going to be off-grid it stands to reason that I don't have internet access.

I will poke Andrew on this. He can fix you up. There was a problem with registering some Classics over the website awhile back maybe it is back? Andrew can add it for you.

Do NOT mistake me for any kind of "expert".

Do you have this Classic connected to a Wireless Router? If you do you should be able to connect to the Wireless network and then the Local App will work. You don't need Internet access for the Local App. You do need Internet access for MyMidnite to work.

You misunderstand the local app. It runs on any pc on your local network. By "local network" that can be as simple as a patch cord from laptop direct to classic, or as RH said plug both into a router.

go back and read the manuals again. Obviously you either need static ip (recomended) on the same subnet, or DHCP somewhere on the LAN.

I set the switches for dhcp 192.168.0.223:502 and plug the ethernet cable into my router and I can use the Karl Smith app fine. I tried it with my laptop by setting the adapter to static ip and turning off the S2.1 on the controller and it doesn't work. I'll go back and read the manual again.

As far as using mymidnite.com and dhcp I had the wrong device id and not the mac address. I now have an account and I set my password. I ran the firmware setup program again (I thought it had worked the first time) but I didn't see the error: Com 8 is in use or not working. I don't have a com 8 so I will uninstall it and try again. My unit sw date ro is 7/29/2012 rev:1043 so I guess that's out of date.

I notice all the *.bat files in C:\MidniteSolar directory have a -COM8 switch. Should that be USB or nothing?

Networking is sometimes not easy. DHCP and static must usually be used one or other. Mixing and matching most likely wont work.

So: static laptop, static classic, same subnet will work.
Or: dhcp classic, dhcp laptop, dhcp running on router will work.

>dhcp 192.168.0.223

One or other! Not both.

One other trap for lite users is did you set the MNDP to custom? Youll need to do this in order to config using the local app. However make sure you have the network settings how you need them before you change it (otherwise you wont know how to connect). The MNDP does a one off config send at boot time. Custom is best for the long term if you use the local app. Custom makes the classic ignore the MNDP dip switches, and leaves any previous settings unchanged.

Click on the above link to get the correct instructions for your computer and Operating System. Follow the instruction Step by Step and it will tell you how to set up the USB to use COM8. Follow it exactly and do not connect the USB cable until it tells you to. COM8 must be set up correctly to load the firmware updates. When you install the firmware software it will do a onetime load of the USB-COM8 driver that has to be installed.

And yes your firmware is way out of date. 1779  2/20/2014 is the latest firmware.

Thanks RH, the instructions could use being the documents area too i think.

OP i would probably hold off updating the firmware until you have your network sorted out, and a little familiarisation time logged.

New firmwares usually involve a config reset. Last thing you need until you have the networking off pat.
