Max Amps on a Classic 200?

Hello everybody,

I have been using a Midnite Classic 200 for many years now, usually on solar.

Last year in April I chose to use it with a Huaya wind turbine (nominal power 1500 watt, max power 2300 watt)

Before April 2020 the wind turbine was used with a Sunway Chinese charge controller equipped with a 3 kw dump load. On one occasion (January 2020) I saw 2700 watt on the dump load during braking (big storm).

February 4, 2021, during a storm, Midnite recorded 2639 watt on a 24v 400Ah Winston LiYFePO4 battery bank (28v max voltage). I wasn't home and the video surveillance system was not turned on (I have several cameras, one is filming the turbine, another one the Cape Cod Wind Speed Indicator, another one the Classic and the last one the watt meter installed on the output of the Classic, this way I have the production in Wh instead of Kwh).

2639 watt at 28v means around 94 A.

I know max amps on a Classic 200 is 79 A.

What do you think? Has anyone seen more than 79A on a Classic 200?

I think you are missing a decimal point.  You display shows 26.93 watts that’s a far cry from 2693 watts

No, it doesn't show 26.93!

It is 2693. Take a closer look at the photo. More than this, Vpv is 65,8 Vdc, which is at the end of the power graph. The power graph starts at 28v.

Photo attached. There is your decimal point.

If it was 26.93 watt, then Vpv would be 28.2 v

It was a huge storm after all ...

Is this a joke?

That is showing us a peak voltage of 65.8 volts for that day

A lot would depend on battery voltage, The classic is pretty fast at regulation so it should not over shoot charge current a lot but lets say it saw the battery at 30 volts for a split second thats still 90 amps, I wonder if the current measurements are out of calibration or something. Is this system on My Midnite? If so if you email me the username I can look at that day ryan@midnitesolar.com

Hi Ryan,

Unfortunately my controller is not connected online yet.

I use wizzbang for measurements, the readings are usually consistent with the wattmeter installed between Midnite and the battery bank (usually Midnite shows slightly higher values than the wattmeter).

Now I realize a Midnite Classic 150 would be a better fit ...

In your photo the bottom pixel of the 3 ( 2639 ) does sort of look like a decimal.  Hard to differentiate depending on what you are viewing the photo with.

Looks like  2639  watts to me.

Now, it might be that it was allowed to shoot a bit over the normal current limit for a moment, and that's OK.

Was probably a wind gust but I believe it.   Problem with wind gusts is that they don't really contribute much to your average power output although they sure are fun to watch !

2639W at 29 volts would be 91 amps.   Just thought I'd throw out another figure.

Since then we had 2 more storms.

I loaded a different graph into the Midnite, asking for more amps at the same volts.

This way I could keep the turbine more busy and not so much without brakes.

As a result, different power peaks: 2170 watts and 2139 watts on 28 volts, that is about 77 - 78 amps
