SPD at battery combiner

Trying to understand more about SPD placement. My theoretical set up would be a Barcelona CC, battery combiner box like MNBCB 500/50, and Powerflo 5 batteries.

If the SPD is connected onto the bus in the battery combiner will this effectively clamp a surge going to all the batteries on that bus? Or does it need to be in line before the battery combiner bus? Literature for the Barcelona breaker box shows the SPD on the battery connections there at the controller. Can someone enlighten me as to why it would be best practice to have the SPD there or why it would/wouldn't work at the combiner bus?
