Probably because you have your brightness set at or below the "default dim" setting.  I have all 3 of mine set to 80/60 and light timeout 5 minutes to get any bright/dim effect.  I have put in a request to dial back the default "dim" by 10 clicks.

So does it timeout like the classic and go completely  dark. The screen I find is not as good as the classic one as one always seem to the pixels/or boxes around the letters at what ever contrast or brightness you set it to.
