With Windows 8.1, there is nothing under comm/ports but under "other devices" I see: BootLoader Version 1.6. Unfortunately, the port is not configurable. I get the comm 8 not available errors.

Looks like you have not finished installing the driver. See Step 17 in the instructions.

The software driver installation fails with a message about "...the third party inf does not contain digital signature information..."

And, here, I thought computers were supposed to make things easier?

Yes, there is a way and instructions on how to install drivers for Windows 8.0 or 8.1

It's a hassle but can be done.  Microsoft has made it extremely hard for normal Joes
to install software unless you give them more money for signed drivers.  We are looking
into this but for now, will have to go through the motions of preparing win 8 for third
party drivers.  Actually, they are Microsoft's drivers but the silly text file is what they
want you to have signed.

Go back and complete Step 12 and Step 13. It just might be a good idea to review the instructions from the begin and see how you make out.

John, I am thinking he should do a complete uninstall and download a new version of  the complete file, like I ended up doing.

Probably a good idea as my pass experience of not following the instructions in sequence can cause some problems. When in doubt starting over at Step 1 it can't hurt.

That is a good idea. I had not been using those instructions from the beginning. The instructions are very good and complete. Not only was I able to install the firmware, but I learned how to thwart Microsoft.

Thanks for all the help.

oh yes .the windows 8 problem is very real .i think windows 8 is crap.Microsoft keeps pushing consumers to have to use its os.Also provide miserable after market support -useless.
